St. Alphonsus Church
The Irish built St. Alphonsus Church in 1855, because they refused to worship with their German-speaking neighbors. The gallery and columns may vaguely remind you of the St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter, though we find it more spooky and atmospheric. That's probably why portions of Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour" take place here. The church no longer holds Mass. Ironically, when St. Mary's was restored, St. Alphonsus was closed and the congregation moved across the street. Hopes for similar restoration here are high. Currently, the church operates an Arts and Cultural Center, which includes an Irish Art museum. You can tour in the interior and the museum 2 days a week, Thursday and Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, with a self-guided audiotape (live tour guides must be arranged in advance.) For information, call the Friends of St. Alphonsus at 504/522-7420 or 504/482-0008.
